About

I LOVE Christmas!!! It is easily my favorite time of year. It's when we can all slow down a bit and remember the reason for the season- Jesus!

Surprising no one, I can't ever pass on the Christmas cookie display- it's one of my favorite parts of the holidays.

My family's cookie platter is filled every year with many types of cookies: the sugar cookies we decorated a few days earlier, Christmas tree cookies, peppermint mocha cookies, and (the most favorite of all) maraschino cherry Christmas bon bons.

These maraschino cherry cookies are as good as they get- maraschino cherries, wrapped in sugar cookie dough, and topped with a cherry glaze. When you bite into them, you get the sweetness from the sugar cookies and the glaze, and then the juiciness and flavor of the cherries.

These cherries are the star of the show. When you bite into the cookies, you'll be met with a sweet and flavorful mouthful. The signature bright red color feels like Christmas.

Essentially what you're making when you put the dough together is sugar cookie dough. Then you'll wrap the pieces the dough around the cherries to envelop them in a coat of yumminess. Bake them, and voila! Deliciousness in one bite.

The real "cherry on top" of these cookies is this cherry glaze. Sweet, delicious, and the perfect color to make these festive, this glaze brings the cherry bon bons all together.

These will easily make their way onto your Christmas cookie platters.

  • ½ cup butter room temperature, unsalted
  • ¾ cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tbsp vanilla
  • 2 tbsp milk room temperature
  • 1 ½ cups flour
  • ⅛ tsp salt
  • 1 jar maraschino cherries 12 oz

I love how this recipe is without food coloring, as well!

Description

  • Sweet sugar cookie dough with a pop of delicious brightness from the cherry inside
  • Fun and interesting
  • Glazed deliciously
  • A great holiday dessert

Instructions

Make the Dough

  1. Mix together butter, sugar, vanilla, and milk.
    • Make sure the butter and milk are at room temperature! If your butter isn't, warm it up in increments of 7 seconds in the microwave. After each 7 seconds, rotate it. You can also nuke the milk in the microwave to warm it up a touch, too!
  1. Add in flour and salt.

Put it Together

  1. Place 1 inch apart on cookie sheet.

Bake

  1. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, then cool. They won't be brown on top, but they'll look set.

Ice the Cookies

  1. Combine butter, powdered sugar, milk, vanilla, and cherry juice together. If you need to, you can keep this in the refrigerator for awhile! Just cover it with plastic wrap. Put the plastic wrap directly on the frosting, so they're touching. This will help to ensure a dry film doesn't form on the icing.

  1. Once maraschino cherry cookies are cooled, dip cookies into the icing so about half of the cookies are covered. Allow to cool, then enjoy! You can also top with some granulated sugar for a bit of extra texture.

Variations

I really love to add some coarse sugar to the top of these for an added crunch. Besides that, I haven't done any variations to this recipe! It certainly doesn't need it- but I'd love to hear your ideas if you have some!

Substitutions

If possible, aim to avoid substitutions in this recipe. Given how the dough wraps around the cherry and bakes, there needs to be the right ratio and type of ingredients so the cookie doesn't turn into a puddle in the oven!

Equipment

  • Large bowl: any large bowl will do! I have these nesting bowls from Amazon that I loooove.
  • Spatula: I am obsessed with the Williams Sonoma "No Kid Hungry" spatulas. This isn't an affiliate link, I literally just love them. They work so well, they hold up nicely, and they're so cute!
  • Cookie Sheet: Wilton pans are always a great choice. I always choose lighter colored metal pans because the edges of the baked goods brown less.
  • Hand Mixer: This Cuisinart hand mixer will just make your life easier, and there are some situations where a name brand is just better. I'd argue this is one!
  • OPTIONAL- KitchenAid Stand Mixer: This is certainly not a must, but you can use a stand mixer to put all of this together super easily!

Storage

You can store these Christmas bon bons in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

Top Tip

Don't wrap too much dough around the cherry, or you'll have oddly shaped maraschino cherry cookies. Use just the minimum amount needed to ensure the cherry doesn't break through the dough while you're working.
